The Rev. Canon Herman Browne, Ph.D., Rector

Fr Herman Browne brings to Trinity Episcopal Church more than three decades of distinguished leadership in the Church, the academy, and public life across three continents. Ordained in the Episcopal Church of Liberia in 1987 and later in the Church of England at Canterbury Cathedral, his ministry has carried him from parish curacies in London to senior leadership roles in Liberia, including Dean of Trinity Cathedral in Monrovia, Head of Theological Education, and Vicar of historic congregations. He also served nearly a decade at Lambeth Palace as Advisor and Senior Advisor to the Archbishops of Canterbury, George Carey and Rowan Williams. Alongside his ecclesiastical work, he has been a prominent figure in higher education, earning a doctorate in Systematic Theology from the University of London and serving as President and later Executive Dean of Doctoral Studies at Cuttington University, as well as Scholar-in-Residence at Virginia Theological Seminary.

A published theologian and civic leader, Dr. Browne’s work spans African theology, liberation thought, liturgy, ecclesiology, and cultural criticism, with books and essays appearing across the United Kingdom, Europe, Africa, and the United States. His service has been recognized with national and international honors, including the Lambeth Cross and Liberia’s Knighthood of the Great Band of the Star of Africa.
